Sometimes a fall down stairs is no one’s fault, you lose your footing or stumble and before you know it you’ve tumbled down the flight of stairs – hopefully to pick yourself up with little more than a couple of bumps and bruises.

At first it might not even be clear to you that there is in fact someone else to blame for your fall, as strange as that may sound. For example, might your fall have been caused by: –

1. A spillage or obstacle on the stairs that hadn’t be removed?
2. Wet stairs? Perhaps due to cleaning or rain?
3. The wrong material used on the stairs themselves? Stairs in commercial settings – bars, restaurants, shops and so on – should be anti-slip to a degree.
4. Were the stairs too steep or the stairway too narrow?
5. Was there a handrail and was it in good repair?
6. Was there adequate lighting?

The answer to some of these questions will be obvious – a missing handrail or a pool of liquid on the stairs themselves perhaps. But what about the material covering the stairs, is it slip proof? What about the gradient of the stairs, are they too steep? Answers to questions like this aren’t immediately obvious and need thorough investigation.
